How to use

  • Enter one or more gravel areas.
  • Set depth, waste, gravel density, and bag weight from the product or supplier.
  • Use cubic yards for bulk delivery and bag count for bagged material comparison.

Input guide

  • Depth is entered in inches.
  • Density varies by stone type and moisture; supplier values are better than defaults.
  • Bag weight is used only for bagged gravel estimates.

Common mistakes

  • Entering depth in feet instead of inches.
  • Using compacted depth without ordering enough loose material.
  • Assuming every gravel product weighs the same per cubic foot.

Assumptions and limitations

  • No compaction factor, sub-base design, drainage, slope, or delivery minimum is included.
  • Area shapes are approximated as rectangles.
  • Optional price is user-entered only.

Formula

  • Area = sum of each area length x width.
  • Volume = area x depth in feet.
  • Adjusted volume = volume x (1 + waste percent / 100).
  • Tons = adjusted cubic feet x density / 2,000.

Example

A 120 sq ft path at 2 in deep has 20 cu ft before waste. With 10% waste and 100 lb/cu ft gravel, estimate 1.1 tons or 44 bags at 50 lb each.

FAQ

Should I order gravel by tons or cubic yards?

Suppliers may quote either. This calculator shows both using your density input so you can compare the same estimate.

Does this include compaction?

No. Add extra allowance or ask the supplier if your project needs compacted depth planning.
