How to use
- Enter patio or walkway areas.
- Enter paver size, pack size, layout pattern, and layer depths.
- Review paver count plus planning quantities for base gravel and bedding sand.
Input guide
- Paver dimensions are entered in inches.
- Pattern choice adds a planning allowance for cuts.
- Base and sand quantities are volume estimates, not structural design.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring cuts around borders and curves.
- Using nominal sizes without checking actual paver dimensions.
- Treating base depth as code or engineering guidance.
Assumptions and limitations
- No excavation, compaction, drainage, edging, slope, or structural specification is included.
- Pattern allowance is not a cut layout.
- Area shapes are approximated as rectangles.
Formula
- Paver area = paver length x width in square feet.
- Area with waste = project area x base waste and pattern allowance.
- Pavers needed = area with waste / one paver area, rounded up.
- Base and sand volumes = project area x layer depth.
Example
A 120 sq ft patio with 4 in x 8 in pavers and 10% waste needs about 476 pavers before pack rounding.
FAQ
Does this include edging?
No. The MVP estimates pavers, base gravel, and bedding sand only. Edging depends on perimeter and product type.
Why does herringbone use more waste?
Herringbone and angled patterns usually create more cuts, so the calculator adds a planning allowance.
